Whipshading tattoo in Miami

Textured shading, made by hand. Whipshading creates gradients with a loose flick of the needle, like a brush stroke. It is one of my three specialties.

What is it?

Instead of filling the shading evenly, the needle is whipped in a quick motion that leaves a gradient of dots. It adds texture and movement without saturating the skin.

How I work it

The texture
I control the whip so the gradient moves smoothly from dark to light.
The contrast
Black and gray that give the design depth.
The combination
I use it alone or with fine line, to add volume to flowers, birds and figures.

Ideas that work

Large flowers, birds like eagles and doves, symbolic figures like Lady Justice, and ornamental designs.
